Prof Fary Khan
Prof Khan (MBBS, MD, FAFRM (RACP)), a rehabilitation physician is Professorial Fellow at the Department of Medicine, University of Melbourne; and School of Public Health and Preventative Medicine, Monash University. She is also the Director of the Rehabilitation Services at the Royal Melbourne Hospital (RMH). She completed her specialist training with the Australasian Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine, Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 2000 and in 2009, she was awarded ‘Doctor of Medicine’ from the University of Melbourne. She is a Representative for the Western Pacific Region WHO, ICF Research Branch, Ludwig-Maximilian University and executive member of the WHO International Disaster Committee. She is Honorary Fellow of the National Aging and Research Institute and the Melbourne EpiCentre, Melbourne Health. She represents 9 public hospital networks in Victoria at the Clinical Leadership Group for the Care of the Older People, Department of Health Victoria (disability policy and planning).
She currently holds a number of international academic research appointments, which include; Senior Research Fellow at: Department of Rehabilitation and Palliative Care; Institute of Neurology, Department of Brain Repair & Rehabilitation, Kings College London; Department of Neuroimmunology and Rehabilitation, University of Hamburg; Department of Neurorehabilitation, Valens Klinik Switzerland; Oxford Centre of Enablement UK; Leeds University UK; and Karolinska University Sweden.
She currently holds number of executive positions, including: Executive member & Co-ordinating Editor, the Cochrane Multiple Sclerosis Review group, Milan; Executive member (Regional representative for Asia, Australia and Oceania), International Society of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation; Vice-Chair, Research Committee for the International Society of Physical and Rehabilitation Medicine; Australian representative for Steering group for the Psychosocial Influences upon Chronic Disease Outcomes across Europe (PICDOE), University of Leeds UK; Member Advisory Committee on Australian and International Disability Data (ACAIDD) for the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare Canberra Australia.
She has a leadership role in rehabilitative care in Victoria and extensive experience in conducting clinical trials. Her research expertise includes: evidence based health outcomes research in disability and health services research. She received inaugural RMH Research Medal in 2014 and inaugural RRACP award for ‘Outstanding contribution to research and mentoring’ in 2009, for her various works. She has published over 200 scientific papers in academic journals (including 14 Cochrane reviews, 12 book chapters), and is invited speaker at national and international conferences (over 50 presentations in last 5 years). She leads a team of interdisciplinary researchers (medical and allied health), implementing and evaluating healthcare innovations and quality improvement programs. She currently supervises 6 PhD and 3 MD students at the University of Melbourne. She is also a reviewer for more than ten neuroscience and rehabilitative care journals.
